NAVIGATION & METEOROLOGY

Decode a METAR

A METAR is a coded aviation weather observation. Read it in groups rather than as one long string.

WSSS 281000Z 17008KT 9999 FEW018 SCT120 31/25 Q1008 NOSIG281000Z = day 28 at 1000 UTC · 17008KT = wind FROM 170° at 8 kt · 9999 = visibility 10 km or more · Q1008 = QNH 1008 hPa

Exam skill: extract the requested information quickly without decoding irrelevant groups.

WEATHER DIAGRAMS

Read wind barbs visually

The shaft indicates the direction the wind is from. Speed marks add together: half barb = 5 kt, full barb = 10 kt, triangular pennant = 50 kt.

20 + 5 = 25 kt
PRINCIPLES OF FLIGHT

Understand ground effect

For CAAS UAPL theory preparation, ground effect is taught as occurring at approximately 1.5 wingspans and below. The effect becomes progressively stronger as the aircraft gets closer to the surface.

✈   WINGSPAN↕ approximately 1.5 wingspans and belowGROUND / SURFACE

The full lesson connects the diagram to induced drag, take-off/landing behaviour and exam-style scenarios.

1. Read this METAR: WSSS 150930Z 02006KT 9999 FEW020 30/24 Q1010 NOSIG. At what UTC time was the observation made?Navigation & Meteorology · Advanced
2. What wind direction and speed are represented by the wind barb shown?
Navigation & Meteorology · Intermediate
3. A multi-rotor hovers very close to a flat surface and appears to require less power than at the same hover height well clear of the surface. What aerodynamic effect BEST explains this?Principles of Flight · Advanced
4. Which is the best example of a hazard rather than a consequence?Safety & Operations · Intermediate
5. A UA is holding position over the ground in a strong headwind. Which statement is correct?Principles of Flight · Advanced
6. A clear video feed but repeated C2 warnings means:General UAS Knowledge · Intermediate
7. A pilot can still see the UA, but a concrete building blocks the direct radio path between controller and aircraft. What is the main concern?General UAS Knowledge · Advanced
8. A crowd forms at a site that was empty during planning. What should the remote pilot do?Safety & Operations · Intermediate
